Notice the problem for unwary American and European immigrants in the photograph above? Chileans color code their condiment bottles according to the spiciness of what it contains. Thus, like a traffic light, ketchup, being the most mild sauce, gets the green squeeze bottle. Mustard takes yellow. And the hot sauce (ají) goes in the red bottle, of course. Other cultures match the color of the bottle to its contents, e.g. ketchup in red bottles, mustard in yellow ones, pickle relish in green ones.
If you do not read this blog entry first, you will not be the first gringo to squirt hot sauce all over your fries. You will be following your color-coded conditioning learned since infancy. You will amuse nearby Chileans too who will wonder why you simply do not read the label before you squirt the contents!
