Dr. John Cobin has lived in Chile for more than ten of the last eighteen years and is married to a chilena (Pamela). He is a committed Baptist and has seven children. Having visited every town in Chile with more than 500 inhabitants, along with much scenery, he’s learned much about the Chilean landscape.
This blog on Chile has several hundred entries, reflecting his vast experience in the Chilean culture, as well as providing insights from an American expatriate perspective, as do his books on Chile. He has written many books, including: Life in Chile: A Former American’s Guide for Newcomers, which has been very popular among expats and newcomers.
Dr. Cobin is well known in Chile on account of his outspoken free market and liberty-oriented views. At one time he hosted the Red Hot Chile radio program and is considered to be an expert on Chile. Bilingual in Spanish and English, his articles are regularly featured on AllAboutChile.com, an online community serving as an information connection to Chile, and his letters to the editor (important in Chile) have been published over a thousand times in national and regional papers. On account of this, he is the most widely published academic in Chile. He has also been interviewed on Chilean television radio and in newspapers. There is probably no foreigner who knows Chile better than Dr. Cobin.
A world traveler, he’s visited 70 countries so far, with a great deal of time spent in Italy as well as Chile. He holds an M.A. in business economics from the University of California at Santa Barbara. A fair number of his academic articles have been published, critical of regulation, zoning and abortion, among other things, and emphasizing public choice and Austrian economics.
Dr. Cobin has a VIP consultancy service – Chile Consulting – which he handles for special clients, and a visa and residency program mainly run by key members of his team. In prior years, he worked as a financial advisor and a small business entrepreneur, and was a radio talk show host and columnist.
